Abstract
A medieval bone flute from the old town of Bern and its significance for the interpretation of the historical distribution of the Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus in Switzerland. A bone flute made out of a humerus of a Griffon Vulture Gyps fulvus was found among ten thousands of animal bones from the 13th century in the old town of Bern. The flute is lacking any decoration and was obviously not manufactured by a skilled craftsman like many of the vulture bone flutes known from the Islamic period in Spain and Portugal. A Mediterranean origin of the flute seems therefore unlikely and we rather support the idea of a local or at least regional provenience. We hypothesize that the Griffon Vulture might have occurred regularly during the middle ages in the area of Switzerland either as a migrant from present-day southern populations or historically documented breeding areas in Germany.
