Abstract
Important areas for waterbirds in Switzerland outside of existing waterbird and migratory bird reserves. Swiss lakes and rivers are home to hundreds of thousands of waterfowl. In 1987 and 1995, the Swiss Ornithological Institute compiled two inventories of waterbird sites of international and national importance. Based on these inventories, Switzerland designated a total of 35 waterbird and migratory bird reserves of international or national importance by 2009. Since the early 1990s, both the ecological conditions and the recreational use in and around Swiss waterbodies have changed considerably. This strongly impacted numbers, composition and distribution of waterbirds. Following the earlier inventories, we have compiled an up-to-date overview of the areas with important waterbird populations outside the existing waterbird and migratory bird reserves. We used the systematically collected results of the waterbird census, breeding population surveys and observation data from the ornitho.ch reporting platform. For the period 2012–2022, we identified 48 areas that are of national importance for a total of 18 species according to quantitative criteria. Eight of these sites also fulfil the criterion for international importance for a total of 3 species. While some of these sites were included in previous inventories, several areas have only achieved national or international importance in the last 30 years. These include sections of lakes in central Switzerland as well as parts of Lake Zurich and Lake Lugano. These changes are due to both the ecological changes in these areas and the establishment of some species as winter visitors during this period (e.g. Red-crested Pochard). The list presented here provides an up-to-date basis for future decisions on the effective protection of waterbirds.
