Abstract
Population trends of selected bird species in the agricultural area of the canton of Basel-Landschaft. – To stop the loss of biodiversity in farmlands, the Swiss Confederation introduced an agri-environment scheme in 1997. Farmers participating in the scheme must contribute «biodiversity compensation areas» that provide habitat for plant and animal species typical of cultivated farmland. Since 1989, the canton of Basel-Landschaft has been running an additional scheme adding financial stimuli for ecological measures. We studied the impact of this scheme in 2013 and 2014, using territory mapping of 20 selected bird species. Surveys covered the entire agricultural area (212 km2) of the canton. A total of 2647 bird territories were detected, compared to 3289 territories counted during an earlier survey in 1993 and 1995, suggesting an overall decline of 20 %. The Woodchat Shrike Lanius senator disappeared from the canton, and Wryneck Jynx torquilla and Meadow Pipit Anthus pratensis declined most severely, relative to the numbers found in the earlier survey. In absolute numbers of territories, Red-backed Shrike Lanius collurio, Eurasian Skylark Alauda arvensis and Common Redstart Phoenicurus phoenicurus declined most strongly. Clear increases were found in Eurasian Kestrel Falco tinnunculus, Common Nightingale Luscinia megarhynchos, and Eurasian Stonechat Saxicola rubicola. Nightingale and Stonechat newly colonized the canton after being absent during the survey in 1993 and 1995. Comparing the distribution of birds and of compensation areas, we conclude that current ecological compensation areas offer valuable solutions for some bird species, with wildflower strips being particularly important. Positive effects of ecological compensation measures seem to be larger in regions with much arable farmland than in regions dominated by grassland. However, there are still substantial deficits concerning quality of ecological compensation areas for species breeding in arable crops (Eurasian Skylark) or in high-quality hedgerows (Red-backed Shrike), and for species of traditionally managed high-stem orchards of high ecological quality (Common Redstart and Wryneck).
